Guterres: The Rafah situation hangs in the balance
Istanbul (MidLand) – United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the ongoing Israeli attack on Rafah has left the Gaza Strip’s southernmost city on edge.
“The situation in Rafah is at its limit, while airstrikes continue across southern Gaza. “More than 1 million Palestinians, half of whom are children, have flocked to the government office in Rafah seeking protection,” Guterres said at a news conference in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Friday.
He warned that a massive Israeli ground operation in Rafah would cause a major humanitarian disaster and halt concerted efforts to help Gazans who are starting to starve.
Guterres stressed that the United Nations was working to facilitate the resumption of the flow of vital supplies to Gaza, which had long been hindered by Israel’s tight blockade, both through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom borders.
“Meanwhile, our partners in the health sector have informed us that all major medical facilities in Rafah will soon be inaccessible or operational, including the only dialysis department still operational in Gaza,” he said.
He said around 100,000 Palestinians have fled Rafah to the north, but aid agencies no longer have tents or food supplies in southern Gaza.
Guterres stressed that, on the basis of international humanitarian law, the safety of civilians in conflicts must be guaranteed.
“And, of course, what is happening in Gaza has a huge impact on the occupied West Bank, where we are seeing increased settler violence, excessive use of force by the Israel Defense Forces (military), demolitions and to evictions,” he said. he said she.
He urged further global efforts to support an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all Israelis detained in the territory and more life-saving aid.
With the growing number of conflicts occurring around the world, Guterres said, the fate of Palestinians, Israelis and the entire Middle East region is becoming uncertain.
Since Monday (5/6), Israeli troops have continued their military offensive in the eastern area of the city of Rafah, forcing more than 100,000 Palestinians to flee the area towards the southwestern part of the Gaza Strip.
