TIME.CO, Jakarta – Google Alphabet (GOOGL.O) has agreed to invest up to $2 billion or about IDR 31.8 trillion in artificial intelligence company Anthropic, a spokesperson for the startup said on Friday, US time, or Saturday, October 28, 2023 WIB .
Citing Reuters, the company invested $500 million up front in rival OpenAI and agreed to add another $1.5 billion over time, the spokesperson said.
Google is already an investor in Anthropic, and the new investment will underline its growing efforts to better compete with Microsoft (MSFT.O), a key backer of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, as Big Tech companies race to embed AI into their business applications.
Amazon.com (AMZN.O) also said last month it would invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic to compete with cloud rivals growing in the artificial intelligence space.
In Amazon’s quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this week, the online retailer detailed that it has invested in $1.25 billion worth of Anthropic bonds, which can be converted into stock, while its ability to invest up to $2.75 billion in a second bond will end in 2017. first quarter of 2024.
Google declined to comment and Amazon did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported the news of Google’s latest deal with Anthropic.
The growing number of investments points to ongoing moves by cloud companies to forge relationships with AI startups that are reshaping their industries.
Anthropic, co-founded by former OpenAI executives and siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, has demonstrated efforts to secure the resources and wealthy backers needed to compete with OpenAI and become an industry leader technology.
