Google brings AI-powered search to more than 120 new countries and regions and supports Indonesian
MidLand, Jakarta – Google presenting Research Generative Experience (SGE) in more than 120 new countries, including Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, according to a blog post by Google’s Hema Budaraju.
“SGE will also support four new languages, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Indonesian, adding to its current support for English, Hindi and Japanese,” Budaraju said as quoted by The Verge, Thursday, November 9, 2023.
This expansion means more people can choose to play SGE. You still need to take a few steps to try it out: You need to join through Google’s Search Labs program, and once you do, you can only use SGE in Chrome on desktop or Google apps on Android and iOS.
In newly added countries, SGE will be accessible in Chrome on desktop starting Wednesday and will be available in Google apps next week, according to Budaraju’s blog.
In an interview, Budaraju declined to say if or when SGE might be available in more browsers. However, he said that “in the future, we may have to come back to you.”
Announcement
Google has also added several new features to SGE.
- The company is testing a new “follow up request” text box that appears directly on the SGE results page, meaning you don’t need to open a separate conversation window in SGE to ask. It will begin rolling out in the next few weeks, first in English in America, according to Budaraju’s blog.
- When you request a translation, Search can now ask you to clarify a single word that can have multiple meanings. The feature will soon be available for English-to-Spanish translation in the United States, with more countries and languages on the way, Budaraju wrote, though you’ll need to sign up to SGE through Search Labs to get it.
- In SGE search results, Google will let you hover over specific coding and health terms to learn more, which adds to the previously announced ability to hover over specific science, economics, and history terms. The feature will launch in English in the US next month, and other countries and languages are expected to follow soon.
SGE results, if good, will answer your question without requiring you to click through to another source, which represents a fundamental shift in search. While Budaraju doesn’t have specific metrics to share on whether SGE results have changed click-through rates from search results to other sources, Google has updated SGE to improve how it displays and contextualizes links.
