Global shipments of foldable phones are expected to hit new records in the second quarter

Samsung had the second and fourth most shipped foldable devices in the second quarter in the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 respectively. Vivo’s Clamshell X Flip takes fifth place. The clamshell led with a 53% share of fold pie during the second quarter.

The top foldable panel supplier during the second quarter was Samsung Display, with a 63% share of all foldable models shipped, down from the company’s 68% share a year earlier. This is the lowest market share for Samsung Display since the first quarter of 2021. The market share of foldable panels shipped by BOE China dropped from a record 32% in the first quarter of this year to 25% in the second quarter.

Things still look good for the quarter which includes the launch of Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5. For this quarter, DSCC expects foldable device shipments to hit a new record with 6.9 million units shipped worldwide. That would be a 10% annualized gain over the third quarter of 2022 and a 200% increase over the second quarter. DSCC estimates that Samsung will dominate during the third quarter with a high 72% share in the foldable device market and no other brand comes close to double-digit shares.

During the third quarter of last year, when Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4, Samsung controlled 86% of the global foldable smartphone market share. A lower number is expected in the third quarter of this year, even though it still shows the dominance of Samsung, it will be lower due to the entry of several new players in the foldable device arena such as Google.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is expected to account for 45% of the foldable device market during the third quarter, followed by the Galaxy Z Fold5 and an estimated 20% share. Huawei Mate X3, Honor Magic V2 and Motorola Razr 40 Ultra will complete the top five. Clamshell will have a 55% share during the third quarter DSCC forecast and Samsung Display will recover to capture the highest share in the foldable panel market, 78%, since the fourth quarter of 2022.
