Get to know Starlink, Elon Musk’s network that will enter Indonesia: Okezone techno

JAKARTA – Starlink is Elon Musk’s business that aims to sell internet connections to almost everyone around the world and was invited to enter Indonesia by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

As previously known, Luhut met with Starlink owner Elon Musk after visiting the Tesla Giga Factory in Austin, Texas, United States. In the discussion, Luhut mentioned Musk’s desire to create affordable internet in Indonesia.

“We also talked about Elon’s desire to collaborate in creating an affordable Internet network in eastern Indonesia using the famous Starlink satellite,” Luhut wrote in a post on his Instagram some time ago.

In the future, SpaceX as the parent company of Starlink will have to collaborate with Indonesian telecommunications companies if it wants to provide its services, as stated by the Ministry of Communications and Information (Kominfo).

“Starlink must cooperate with domestic telecom companies if it wants to enter Indonesia. For example, collaborating with Telkomsat,” said Director General of Information and Public Communication (Dirjen IKP) of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Usman Kansong.

If simplified, Starlink works as an internet service in Indonesia. However, what differentiates it is that Starlink provides a broadband network using space satellites and not via fiber optic cables usually used by most Indonesian operators.

After transmitting the broadband network to earth via satellite, the network will then be captured by the Starlink base in the user’s home area. The WiFi router device works to channel the network to the user’s gadget.

The Internet access speed offered by Starlink is no joke as it varies from 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps, with a data transfer time or latency of 20 ms. As for Starlink’s coverage area, it is said that it can reach remote areas. For such Internet access, users must pay a service order deposit of 99 US dollars, or approximately IDR 1.4 million (exchange rate 14,400 IDR). (Salsabila Nur Azizah)
