Banda Aceh (MidLand) – Central Javan hang gliders Supardi and Ayyas Yahya won a gold medal in the B-class (XC) team cross-country skiing competition at the 21st Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) 2024.
The Winner Honor Ceremony (UPP) was held on Sunday at Rembele Airport, Takengon, Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh.
Supardi-Ayyas beat the East Java contingent represented by Ariiq Sufyan Gantha Nreswara and Ahmad Teguh Wibowo, as well as the West Java contingent (Irham M Fauzi and Dede Junaedi).
“This is my second PON. Previously, at PON Papua I had not obtained (a medal, ed.). I have been playing hang gliding since 2014,” Supardi said.
Based on the previous experience of PON, he admitted that the implementation of PON Aceh-North Sumatra, especially for hang gliding sport, has gone better.
“In my opinion, Aceh’s PON is better and more structured. The game mechanisms are also better,” said the athlete born in Karanganyar, Central Java, on November 12, 1984.
However, he said, the obstacle faced by PON Aceh-North Sumatra was the weather conditions, especially the wind which was blowing strong enough to make hang gliding impossible.
In addition to PON, Supardi also participated in numerous national championships (Campionati Nazionali) to further hone his hang gliding skills.
In addition to the gold, Central Java has also won a silver and a bronze medal so far, namely for the individual XC B class and the landing accuracy B class (KTM) respectively.
Hang gliding sport at PON XXI Aceh-North Sumatra competes in eight events, namely landing accuracy (KTM) classes A and B, cross country or cross country (XC) classes A and B, as well as team numbers XC classes A and B,
The six race numbers were completed by the athletes and the winner’s honor ceremony (UPP) took place on Sunday afternoon (15/9).
The other two numbers, namely the numbers of the class A and B matches, started only last Saturday (14/9).
43 athletes from 15 provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Banten, West Java, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, participated in the hang gliding sport at PON Aceh-North Sumatra.
Then, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara and Papua.
