FTUI students create innovative aviation materials from natural sisal fiber

MidLand, Jakarta – A total of five students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FT), University of Indonesia (user interface) has succeeded in creating sustainable innovations in aeronautical materials. Together with the Kutech Engineering team, they use the natural material sisal fiber as a more environmentally friendly alternative to replace the use of carbon and glass in aircraft interiors.

Led by Nandy Setiadi Djaya, Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, FTUI, this innovative team consists of Josiah Enrico Syefatiawan, Dhifan Kemal Akbar, Revaldy Putra Agatha, Yasmine Karenita Siregar (class of 2019) and Soultan Aliefiansyah (class of 2020).

Josiah Enrico Syefatiawan, one of the team members, said the idea of ​​creating innovation emerged when they realized the need to develop sustainable technology in the aviation sector.

“We are looking for alternative solutions in aeronautical materials using natural materials such as sisal fiber which has the potential as a reinforcement for polymer composites. In addition to its function for traditional tools, sisal fiber has the potential to be used as a in the aviation industry. aviation and automotive industries,” he said as quoted by the UI website on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

Sisal (Agave sisalana) is a natural fiber producing plant with great potential with the advantages of a strong fiber, resistant to high salt levels, renewable and environmentally friendly. The fiber extracted from the leaves is also known as sisal fiber.

Initially, sisal fiber was widely used to make ropes, such as ropes for tying tobacco leaves in Madura and jute bags for packaging agricultural products. However, currently, natural sisal fiber can be applied more widely, including for domestic industrial purposes and even for automotive interior components.

“Using sisal fiber has the advantage of being lightweight, fire-resistant and durable. “With these characteristics, sisal fiber is able to replace materials such as carbon fiber and glass fiber that require large consume energy in the manufacturing process and are difficult to recycle,” he said.

The hope, Dhifan Kemal said, is that the use of sisal fiber material will reduce the manufacturing costs of aircraft interior panels and significantly improve the sustainability aspect of aviation technology.
