Forest and land fires in Baluran Situbondo National Park can still be contained
With the onset of the dry season this year there are surface fires on the teak forest floor (at the edge of the Pantura Highway) and we can control them.
Situbondo (MidLand) – The Baluran National Park office in Situbondo, East Java, said that several forest and land (karhutla) fires have occurred since the start of the dry season this year, but officials can currently still control them and they did not spread.
Teak forest fires in the protected area were limited to the teak forest floor along the Situbondo-Banyuwangi Pantura Highway.
“With the onset of the dry season this year, there are shallow fires on the floor of the teak forest (on the edge of the Pantura Highway) and we can control them, so that the fires do not spread,” said the park manager National Baluran Situbondo, Johan Setiawan, in Situbondo, Monday.
According to him, several forest fires have occurred in the area of the national park, the fire has burned teak leaves and dry weeds on the side of the Pantura highway and it is strongly suspected that the cause of the fire was human factors.

Therefore, Johan appealed to the public and motorists crossing the Pantura teak forest road in the Baluran National Park area not to throw away cigarette butts carelessly as they may cause a fire.
“We ask for your cooperation to take care of the environment, because this fire would not have been possible if there had not been fire. And the fire happens because of human factors,” he said.
Data obtained by MidLand, in September 2023, for five days there were forest and land fires on Mount Baluran that burned an area of about 180 hectares.
At that time, the Baluran Situbondo National Park Office was forced to temporarily close tourist visits due to forest and land fires. Nature tourism in the nature reserve area was reopened after the fire was successfully extinguished.
