Foreign Minister: 94.2% of Malaysia-RI land demarcation boundary agreed
Kuala Lumpur (MidLand) – Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamad Hasan said the delimitation of the territory between Malaysia and Indonesia of 1,943.2 kilometres (km) or 94.2% of 2,064 km has been agreed through 22 memoranda of understanding (MoU).
Meanwhile, for maritime demarcation, the two countries have just signed the Malacca Straits Agreement and the Sulawesi Sea Agreement on June 8, 2023 in Putrajaya, he said at an oral question-and-answer session at Dewan Rakyat, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
According to him, the agreements will be fully implemented and enforced after both sides complete their respective internal processes.
He said that efforts have always been made between Malaysia and neighbouring countries to ensure that land and maritime border issues could be resolved or implemented. However, it is necessary to be careful and very thorough when negotiating to resolve the border issue, because it involves state sovereignty which must not be compromised.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Mohamad said Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam are in the process of negotiating to finalise a memorandum of understanding covering a land demarcation distance of 528.45 km.
Currently, he said that the marking and field measurement works have been carried out by both countries covering a distance of 175.96 km or 33.3% of the total distance. Both sides seek to resolve the demarcation issue on the basis of an agreed time frame not later than 2034.
He said Malaysia’s negotiations with Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam were conducted through existing bilateral mechanisms to resolve land and maritime borders.
