Food tech expert IPB explains the enthusiasm for plastic rice
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Food technology expert who is also a professor at the Department of Food Science and Technology, IPB University, Slamet Budijanto, provided information plastic rice What is circulating in society and what many people are discussing right now is a hoax.
“In fact, even if it is true that plastic rice exists, it does not make sense. As a researcher, I can confirm that what is claimed to be plastic rice is a hoax,” Slamet said, Friday, October 13, 2023.
He said the grains resembling rice circulating in the community are plastic granules or seeds, not rice. In reality, you said, the term “plastic rice” does not exist. So far, plastic pellets are available that can have various shapes, including those that resemble rice.
“What went viral was actually plastic seeds, but they were called plastic rice. “So it’s not rice,” she said.
According to him, if there are people or companies producing rice products from plastic, it makes no sense and is not suitable for consumption because it is dangerous. “In fact, producing plastic pellets requires much higher production costs than the current selling price of rice,” he said.
He said, the price of one kilogram of recycling plastic pellets (to recycle) reached IDR 20,000 on its own. It is also more expensive than premium rice, which currently costs around IDR 15,000.
“You can imagine, premium rice alone costs a maximum of IDR 12,000 to 15,000. If it is plastic to recycle “So it’s shaped like rice. If you want to make a profit, how much do you want to sell it for?” he said.
In some cases, analog rice is produced glyceryl monostearate (GMS) which is a palm derived product. Some researchers call it a “plasticizer” that works to make the rice-like product less sticky and firmer.
“It may be that this term is misinterpreted as plastic. “If so, this misperception needs to be corrected,” she said.

He appealed to the public: If an incident like this occurs, it can be a lesson for people to be more careful and critical in responding to a problem. Furthermore, he said, in the current age of information inundation, critical thinking is an important resource in determining whether news is true or not.
“So in this age of open information, knowledge “We need to be strengthened so that if there are problems like this, we don’t fall for hoaxes,” he said.
According to him, without sufficient knowledge, people will not be able to filter which information is true and which is false, whether it makes sense or not. “So critical thinking is important,” said Slamet, who is also dean of the College of Agricultural Technologies.
He said he innovated and created analog rice which was once called plastic rice. In fact, he said, the rice analogue he produces is not made from rice, but from various other food sources such as corn, sweet potatoes, taro, sorghum and others.
“Even if it’s not from padi“, analog rice can actually be an alternative food to rice and has a multitude of health benefits,” he said.
