Expert: Dialogue between civilizations is important to maintain world peace
Colombo (MidLand) – The founding director of the Belt and Road Initiative of Sri Lanka, Yasiru Ranaraja, believes that the establishment of the International Day for Dialogue between Civilizations is very important for maintaining world peace and development, as well as the improvement of human well-being.
He underlined the important role of continuous dialogue between civilizations in promoting global peace, development and prosperity, highlighting China’s contribution in fostering intercultural exchange and cooperation.
Ranaraja told Xinhua that he praised the establishment of the International Day for Dialogue between Civilizations. He believed that this day had a significant role in raising world awareness of the importance of the diversity of civilizations and encouraging intercultural exchange and cooperation.
“Furthermore, today’s designation influences governments and international organizations to create and implement policies that support cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, leading to more comprehensive and inclusive global governance,” he said.
Ranaraja assessed that China has made significant contributions in supporting mutual learning and dialogue between civilizations, especially through initiatives such as the Global Civilization Initiative. According to him, China’s commitment to regional and global peacekeeping has earned the trust of neighboring countries
“In Sri Lanka, a prominent example is the establishment of the Confucius Institutes at the University of Colombo, the University of Kelaniya and the University of Sabaragamuwa in Sri Lanka. These institutions not only facilitate language learning but also encourage intercultural exchange and the principle of mutual respect,” he said.
He stressed that China is not only improving Sri Lanka’s infrastructure but also facilitating cultural exchanges and interactions between workers from the two countries.
“This development reminds us of the historic Silk Road, which was not only a trade route but also a route for cultural exchange and mutual learning. By connecting Sri Lanka to the Belt and Road initiative, China has supported connectivity and regional cooperation, while encouraging mutual understanding and dialogue between civilizations,” Ranaraja said.
