TIME.CO, Jakarta – Pertamina plans to produce Pertamax Green 92 as a replacement Pertalite which will be removed starting next year. This product is Pertalite mixed with 7% ethanol. With this mixing the octane value of the Pertamax, which was originally 90, increased to 92.
“We will again breed what we call Pertamax Green 92. We actually mix Pertalite with ethanol, increasing the octane rating from 90 to 92,” Pertamina Principal Director Nicke Widyawati said during a hearing with Commission VII.
So what is the ethanol used as a blend to increase the octane rating of Pertalite from 90 to 92?
According to the Pertamina website, ethanol is a chemical compound also known as ethyl alcohol or alcohol. It is a colorless liquid and evaporates with a characteristic aroma. This compound is the most common type of alcohol used in everyday life.
Ethanol is generally produced through the fermentation process of glucose or sugar. The materials used are usually plants such as corn, sugar cane, potatoes, sweet potatoes or straw. This type of ethanol is called bioethanol. Meanwhile, the ethanol produced through synthesis is called methanol. It is produced from methane.
Ethanol is widely used in various applications. Among others, as an alternative fuel for motor vehicles, raw materials for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and also as a solvent in industry. In the pharmaceutical field, ethanol is used as the main solvent for many organic compounds. As well as as a bactericide or bacteria exterminator. Especially as a skin cleanser before injection.

Ethanol 60 to 80% is effective as a powerful and rapid bactericide against bacteria, as a germicidal tool and as a sedative. Additionally, this substance is used as a central nervous system depressant that provides a calming and euphoric effect.
As an alternative fuel, ethanol is used to blend fossil fuels. Considered more environmentally friendly. This is because the resulting carbon emissions are lower. According to the government’s plan, Pertamina will use a blend of 7% ethanol to produce this type of fuel Pertamax Green 92.
With the addition of 7% ethanol, Perthalite which originally had a value of 90 RON will become 92 RON. This fuel type will be used as a replacement for Pertalite which will be phased out starting next year. This policy aims to meet the minimum standards for petrol sales in Indonesia according to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The minimum limit is 91 RON.
