Epidemiologists say rise in Covid-19 cases in Singapore is due to post-pandemic euphoria
MidLand, Jakarta – Epidemiologist Dr. Dicky Budiman said the increase in cases COVID-19 Of Singapore which is double the impact of post-pandemic euphoria.
Singapore’s official healthcare website, Ministry of Health, said the increase in Covid-19 infections in Singapore occurred during the period 19-25 November 2023. Their latest data shows that there are approximately 22,904 cases currently being handled.
“What is currently happening in Singapore is a logical consequence of the circulation of respiratory tract infections that were previously endemic,” Dicky told TimeTuesday 5 December 2023.
The Griffith University graduate epidemiologist also said Covid-19 will not disappear completely. The reason is that this type of virus continues to undergo mutations every period. Even if there are many infections later, according to Dicky, it won’t be as bad as at the beginning.
“Covid-19 is a group that continues to increase in numbers, moreover, the virus is also reportedly mutating in many patterns. Of course, this condition poses a risk for its massive spread,” the analytics expert said of Covid-19.
The increase in cases seen in Singapore, Dicky said, will also impact Indonesia if the government and society ignore health mitigation measures. The reason is that Covid-19 cannot be solved by vaccination alone.
The rules previously implemented and respected in Indonesia will have to be respected even after the end of the pandemic. Dicky regrets the community’s careless attitude towards Covis-19, which seems like euphoria after a long pandemic.
“After the pandemic entered the endemic period, there was extraordinary euphoria, both in the government and in society. They no longer wore masks, did not keep their distance and did not take care of their health,” said Dicky, which is currently found in Europe.
While vaccination is not a definitive step towards eliminating Covid-19, Dicky believes the government still needs to raise awareness of the importance of vaccination to tackle this virus. In simple terms, according to Dicky, vaccination can prevent the spread and make the body more immune.
Dicky is worried about the birth rate which increases almost every day and new children appear. Since distribution, children are a vulnerable group to be infected by the virus. Furthermore, vaccinations cannot be administered at the maximum dose to children.
Overcoming this problem, Dicky called on the Indonesian government and parents to work together to protect and understand the dangers of Covid-19. This virus cannot be ignored even after the pandemic ends.
Lack of knowledge of global conditions
Announcement
The main factor that Dicky criticizes regarding the handling of Covid-19 in Indonesia is the lack of global literacy and understanding. Many cases and examples have actually occurred in other countries but in Indonesia they are still ignored because they feel safe.
“I see that related institutions and parties lack support and minimal understanding of global conditions. I ask the Ministry of Health not to be silent now. This is the government’s responsibility,” Dicky said.
Furthermore, Dicky also believes that vaccine distribution in Indonesia should be free. This aims to ensure that people are not skeptical and have more motivation to participate in vaccination.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has recommended that the Indonesian people immediately vaccinate those who have not yet done so. The reason is that vaccination can reduce the spread of Covid-19 and strengthen the body’s immunity against it.
“We also see an increase, but it’s good that we still have vaccinations. If we get vaccinated, we should be good,” Budi said as quoted by Antara, December 4, 2023.
Budi said vaccination is not enough to do just once. People must be vaccinated against Covid-19 up to a booster dose. Currently, Budi said vaccination facilities are still free until December 2023.
“As long as he is still free in December, let’s take advantage of it,” Budi Gunadi Sadikin said. Because if it is not used, the impact will also have repercussions on the community itself.
Although Singapore has seen a doubling of Covid-19 cases, Budi said the situation in Indonesia is currently still safe. The reason is that there has been no increase in patients in Indonesian hospitals related to Covid-19.
“We don’t see those who are hospitalized. There is indeed an increase in people affected, but since their immunity is good, with vaccination it becomes good”, concluded Budi.
