Elon Musk’s Neuralink gets green light for brain implants in humans: Okezone techno
JAKARTA – Neuralinka brain implant company owned by Elon Musk announced that it had received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to begin conducting research on humans last May. The company revealed that it has received the green light from an independent review authority to begin seeking human subjects for trials of brain implants in paralyzed patients.
According to a blog post from the California-based neurotechnology company, the main goal of the human trial is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the brain-computer interface (BCI), also called Link. This company and BCI Neuralink are working on creating an implantable device that would allow people to control objects with their minds.
Quoting from MashableWednesday (9/20/23), “The initial goal of our BCI was to give people the ability to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts,” the company explained in its announcement.
Elon Musk and his colleagues who have yet to conduct the “first human clinical trials” have been criticized for the way they handled animal test subjects. This led the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to file a complaint in February 2022. They accused Neuralink of conducting invasive and deadly brain experiments.
In December of the same year the company was investigated by the US federal government for allegedly violating animal welfare regulations. According to data, the Neuralink company is suspected of killing 1,500 animals, including pigs, monkeys and rats, since 2018.
Responding to the allegations made against the company, Neuralink said its team respects and values the rhesus macaques it cares for. Elon Musk, as the owner of the company, also chimed in via his X account on Sunday (9/10/2023).
“No monkeys died from the Neuralink implant. “The first time in our initial facilities, to minimize the risk to healthy monkeys, we chose monkeys that were already close to death.” protested Elon Musk.
