Egypt reveals new ceasefire proposal in Gaza

Cairo (MidLand) – Egypt has revealed a new proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, blockaded by Israel in response to attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“There is a proposal to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,” Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Monday during a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia.

Without elaborating, he said he had asked Hamas and Israel to study the proposal.

“We must end the ongoing crisis in Gaza to resolve the Palestinian issue,” Shoukry said.

Egypt’s foreign minister reiterated Cairo’s rejection of the Israeli military operation in Rafah, which hosts more than 1.4 million Palestinian refugees. “We underline the need to avoid a humanitarian disaster against civilians,” he said.

An Egyptian intelligence delegation held talks with Israeli officials on Friday (26/4) to discuss a proposed ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

The new proposal includes Israel’s willingness to discuss a “sustainable restoration of calm” in Gaza after the initial release of the hostages on humanitarian grounds, two Israeli officials told the Axios news site.

A Hamas delegation will visit Egypt on Monday to present its response to the ceasefire proposal.

An Israeli delegation is also expected to visit Egypt on Tuesday (30/4) to conduct indirect negotiations with Hamas regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, public broadcaster KAN reported.

Hamas is estimated to hold more than 130 Israelis hostage, while Tel Aviv holds more than 9,100 Palestinians in its prisons.

Hamas is calling for an end to Israel’s deadly attacks on the Gaza Strip and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory over a hostage and prisoner exchange deal with Tel Aviv.

A previous deal from November 2023 called for the release of 81 Israelis and 24 foreigners in exchange for 240 Palestinians, including 71 women and 169 children.
