Egypt calls for ceasefire in Gaza, preventing new war in Lebanon

Cairo (MidLand) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has urged the parties concerned to make international mediation efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, while warning of the risk of a new battlefield emerging in Lebanon.

Al-Sisi made the appeal when he met with the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown, in Cairo on Sunday.

The meeting took place as Egypt prepares to host a new round of ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hezbollah.

In addition to warning about the potential danger posed by the emergence of a new battlefield in Lebanon, he also stressed the importance of maintaining Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty.

Al-Sisi stressed the importance of supporting the joint efforts made by Egypt, Qatar and the United States to quickly reach a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate a prisoner exchange to pave the way for a more stable and peaceful environment in Gaza.

He highlighted the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza and stressed the need for a comprehensive political process to build a Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution to help maintain long-term regional stability.

General Brown expressed the United States’ appreciation for Egypt’s central role in supporting stability, security and peace.

Brown also expressed the United States’ commitment to continuing joint efforts in military cooperation to advance shared interests and support regional stability.

Israeli warplanes carried out more than 40 airstrikes in southern Lebanon early Sunday, the most serious assault since cross-border attacks with Hezbollah began on October 8, 2023.

The Israeli military said the raid was intended to prevent Hezbollah from carrying out attacks.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah claimed to have launched hundreds of missiles and drone to Israel as the first stage of retaliation for the assassination of their commander Fouad Shukr in Beirut last July.

Since October 8, 2023, Lebanese Hezbollah has been engaged in daily firefights with Israeli soldiers along the Blue Line. The fighting has resulted in hundreds of casualties, most of them on the Lebanese side.

The rise in tensions comes amid the war in Gaza, a region where Israel has killed more than 40,400 Palestinians since a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Israel’s military assault has destroyed much of the region and left much of the population homeless, hungry and vulnerable to disease.
