Don’t be surprised if there is an asteroid called The Beatles or Dolly Parton: Okezone techno

Now scientists are starting to try to create more populist names for asteroid. So don’t be surprised if there are names for asteroids in the future that are unique and thought-provoking.

It is possible that in the future there will be an asteroid named The Beatles, Dolly Parton, Mr. Spock or any other artist. The reason is that, in naming an asteroid, whoever finds it has the right to determine its name.

Progress technology, thousands of new asteroids and other minor planets are discovered every year. They vary in size, from less than a meter in diameter to hundreds of miles across.

However, to receive a name, scientists must observe it long enough for its orbit to be precise, before it is assigned a permanent number and merits a name, such as (88705) Potato.

As of October 5, only 24,447 of 629,008 asteroids had been discovered and named, according to Gareth Williams, secretary of the IAU Working Group on the Nomenclature of Small Objects, as reported by the website MirrorTuesday (10/10/2023).

They voted on proposed potential names for asteroids, comets and minor planets and approved several dozen names at once. It is so easy to find asteroids that it is not uncommon for discoverers to take the opportunity to name these asteroids after colleagues and people close to them.

As Williams did, a young astronomer when given the opportunity proposed names for the four numbered and unnamed asteroids that had been discovered.

Well, the proposed name is The Beatles. “I noticed that Mozart and Beethoven had asteroids, but there didn’t seem to be any contemporary musicians,” he explains. From there, he thought, to include the Beatles.

There is also an asteroid called Lucy, named after an ancient creature that lived about 3.2 million years ago and later, named after the Beatles song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, and, of course, also Yoko Ono is there.

A practical rule in naming asteroids is not to give an asteroid its own name. “Almost anything that has been named cannot be changed,” explained Green, one of the members of the commission that examined the names of the minor planets.

However, there are several rules when it comes to naming asteroids. Cannot contain more than 16 characters, no spaces for numbers. Then there are rules to avoid controversy: no religious figures and no politicians. (Salsabila Nur Azizah)
