How scrubbers work
– Capture of solid particles
Some scrubbers are designed to capture solid particles in exhaust gases. This is usually done using filtration media or an electrostatic precipitator. Solid particles adhere to the surface of the filter media or are attracted by the electric field in the electrostatic precipitator.
– Gas filtration

Scrubbers can remove toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S). A commonly used method is the wet scrubber, in which exhaust gases are passed through a cleaning fluid, such as an alkaline solution that neutralizes or precipitates gaseous contaminants.
– Adsorption
Some scrubbers use media with high adsorption capacity, such as activated carbon, to adsorb toxic gases or organic compounds from the exhaust gases.
– Chemical reaction
In some cases, scrubbers are used chemical reaction to convert contaminants into safer compounds. One example is the use of calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) to convert SO2 into calcium sulfate (gypsum).
