Digital forestry, researchers simulate tree growth using artificial intelligence

MidLand, Jakarta – A research team from the Department of Computer Science and the Digital Forestry Institute at Purdeu University in the United States and Kiel University in Germany took advantage artificial intelligence OR TO THE to see the growth of the trees. This research can be said to be a combination of technology and nature, through digital modeling.

This research is believed to represent a significant breakthrough in the use of artificial intelligence technology, particularly to see the growth and shape of trees in more modern ways.

Purdeu University professor Bedrich Benes said the research was inspired by natural phenomena to create innovative artificial intelligence models. The collected data will be fed to the AI model to review the detected intrinsic behavior.

According to Benes, the use of artificial intelligence to simulate the growth and shape of trees is extraordinary and efficient. The reason is that, with artificial intelligence, all the information provided can be intricately filtered to replicate the shape of a tree in a neural model of almost one megabyte.

“AI models learn from large data sets to mimic discovered behavior,” Benes said in the report EARTH, Wednesday, January 23, 2024. He added: “This is a complex measurement, but it has been compressed into a small amount of data.”

Spend a decade researching

The practical applications of AI models are enormous. However, this technology must undergo a series of rigorous training courses in order to record and encode the development of local trees. If successful, AI capabilities will allow data to be collected on complex trees with detailed geometry.

Benes admitted that he has been studying artificial intelligence models for a decade. The findings are detailed in two papers published by ACM Transactions on graphics and IEEE Transactions on visualizations and computer graphics.

The use of artificial intelligence to simulate the growth and shape of trees has been studied extensively by German researchers. They claim that the research uses advanced learning artificial intelligence, the aim of which is to develop growth models for various tree species, for example pine, walnut, oak, and trees without leaves.

Benes explained that the research used rather complicated steps, one of which was 3D modeling of vegetation for computer graphics. “Although artificial intelligence appears to have become widespread, there is still no evidence of nature-related 3D geometric modeling,” Benes said.

Benes believes this situation is normal, as no technology experts had previously been invited to focus on tree research. Meanwhile, researchers’ efforts to uncover the complexity of tree growth have encountered several obstacles. The reason is that there are thousands of data points that need to be summarized before drawing conclusions.

As a result of this problem, researchers turned to artificial intelligence by feeding data from thousands of trees into a modeling program. Benes said that this action was an effort to collect the final data that had been sorted according to the capabilities of the artificial intelligence, so that a direct introduction to the tree and its growth form could be clearly depicted.

Benes imagines future conditions if this research is developed further. According to him, in the future, when someone takes a photo of a tree, 3D geometry will appear on the device he is using. So this experience can be called a new perspective and allows unique interactions to emerge.

This research vision is in line with the mission of digital forestry which is characterized by a new era of integration between technology and nature. In short, Benes believes that the work he pioneered can be used as an important milestone between artificial intelligence and natural modeling.
