Determining UKT reduction for students, ITB: we don’t use feelings, there are rules
MidLand, Jakarta – Approaching the new or even semester starting in February 2024, they are 1,786 student Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) request a single exemption or UKT. The UKT reduction programme, according to ITB finance director Anas Ma’ruf, is governed by a regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.
“And each university has the freedom to determine policies,” he said at a press conference on tuition arrears at the ITB, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024.
The UKT reduction mechanism uses a formula that is accountable to all reviewers. From this formula, if a student’s request to reduce the UKT is rejected, Anas explains, it means that there are other students who would be more deserving of the reduction.
This determination is based on UKT submission requirements data which is processed into an economic index. “We don’t use feelings in this determination, we don’t use subjectivity, but everything has rules and is responsible,” she said.
In addition to those who requested concessions, 2,732 students also applied for the Education Provision Fee (BPP) instalment. According to Anas, at the end of each semester students have the right to submit various data for verification. “In some cases the administration failed, for example there was no parental income,” she said.
Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Development Muhamad Abduh said ITB did its best to help university students. In some cases, such as those experienced by students in the Independent Selection pathway or international classes, they declared from the beginning that they were able to pay the full cost of their education without subsidies.

“When you are still in arrears, you are given an alternative, pay first, there are scholarships, installments from banks, credit cards and including Danacita,” Abduh said.
According to him, the leave option is also reasonable and permissible. Abduh said students who take leave may not pay tuition at all. Vacation time is not counted as study time. “For example, if he wants to work first, that’s fine, right, he’s tired. “I’ll go back to school after work,” he said.
Approaching the new or even this year’s semester, ITB is tightening the rules regarding credit. Students who do not pay UKT or arrears cannot complete the Study Plan Form (FRS). “There needs to be a trigger for them to realize that this is an issue to talk about,” Abduh said.
