Jakarta (MidLand) – Defense Minister (Menhan) and President-elect Prabowo Subianto have revealed how Indonesian President Joko Widodo is preparing his successor to lead Indonesia for the next five years.
Prabowo, speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic of Indonesia at the Geoportal One Map 2.0 event and the presentation of PSN and KEK results in Jakarta on Thursday, said he had the impression that President Jokowi had been training to get used to presidential duties.
“I was asked to represent the President, Joko Widodo, and in this case what I transmitted were actually notes, pointers from him,” Prabowo said.
“I think the President is actually training me so that I won’t be too surprised after I take office, God willing,” he continued.
Prabowo and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of President Jokowi, will be inaugurated as President of the Republic of Indonesia-Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the term 2024-2029 on 20 October 2024.
In the months leading up to the inauguration, Prabowo also admitted that he was often asked to accompany President Jokowi in a series of working meetings with the ranks of Indonesia’s Advanced Cabinet ministers. During those meetings, Prabowo said he was also asked to sit next to President Jokowi.
“So that’s how I feel. He (President Jokowi) now attends almost every cabinet meeting and sits next to the current president,” Prabowo said.
He also praised the way Jokowi has prepared himself to get used to presidential duties. “This is his way, one of the leadership lessons we have received is that of a humble leader and secondly, a leader who prepares his successor,” Defense Minister Prabowo said.
During the event, Prabowo once again showed his optimism that Indonesia will be able to achieve economic growth of 8%.
“The coordinating minister of economy had previously said that we are optimistic and that we can achieve growth above 5%. If only I were more courageous. We must have the courage to set higher targets. “I am optimistic that we can reach 8%,” Prabowo said.
According to him, the goal of 8% growth is not impossible, because Indonesia has a great wealth of natural resources.
“When I look at the situation, I am very optimistic, our wealth is very great, our potential is very great,” Prabowo said.
The event was attended by several ministers from Indonesia’s Advanced Cabinet, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of Indonesia Hadi Tjahjanto, Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Minister of the Interior Tito Karnavian, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman.
Then, there are also the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif, the Minister of State Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform Abdullah Azwar Anas, the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya, the Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, the Minister of Transport Budi Karya Sumadi, the TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and the national police chief, General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
