Causes of Ice Dew on Bromo and Dieng, is it toxic?
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia is a country famous for its tropical climate. This country also has several places that experience unique natural phenomena, for example embun is.
This is interesting because as a tropical country, ice rarely forms naturally. An area that often experiences frost is Dieng, Central Java and Mt BromineEast Java.
However, what causes this frost to form and is it toxic?
Causes of the formation of ice dew
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), frost in Dieng is related to the dry season. Dieng is a plateau with quite cold air temperatures.
During the dry season, the sky tends to be clear, and there are no clouds to cover it. At night, when there is no radiation returning from the clouds, the air temperature can drop dramatically to below the freezing point. This causes frost or frozen dew to form.
Other factors that influence the formation of frozen dew are the apparent movement of the sun, the intrusion of cold temperatures, and the rate at which temperatures decrease with altitude. During the dry season, temperatures are generally cooler and the land surface is drier. Much of the solar thermal radiation is dispersed into space, causing the night air temperature to be very low.
“The temperature of the earth, because there is no radiation, obviously at night there is no sun, in fact the radiant energy of the earth radiates back without any reflection especially from the clouds, so it becomes cold, it becomes cold and can even reach the least,” said Dodo, head of the BMKG Climate Change Information Center.

Is frost poisonous?
BMKG Class II Meteorological Station Chief Ahmad Yani Semarang Sutikno explained that according to Dieng residents, upas dew is poisonous dew.
“This phenomenon occurs when the temperature becomes cool, then cold, frozen dew falls. This dew is what covers the potato plants, and the people of Dieng call it dew because its effect is to cause the potatoes to die,” he said. said, quoted by Antara news.
“Under such conditions, more of the solar heat will be wasted and lost to space. This is what causes the air temperature in the dry season to be cooler than the air temperature in the rainy season,” he said .
Frost forms when water vapor in the air condenses overnight and then freezes when the air temperature is very cold. When temperatures reach zero degrees Celsius or below, frost forms on the surface of plants, leaves or grass. This causes damage to the plant.
Moreover Diengmany other places in Indonesia have also been affected by the hail phenomenon, such as Mount Semeru and Jayawijaya Mountains.
