To arrive at this conclusion, NASA collected temperature data from all over the Earth using tens of thousands of metrology stations. In addition, they also record sea surface temperatures using information from ships and buoys.

The data is then analyzed using a method that takes into account the spacing of temperature stations which vary around the world. Furthermore, they also consider the effects of district heating which can distort the calculations.

“This July is not only hotter than the previous July. This is the warmest month on record since 1880,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of GISS.

He said it was scientifically clear that this condition was not normal. Furthermore, the warming that is occurring on Earth today is due to the emission of greenhouse gases. “Rising average temperatures are fueling dangerous extreme heat that people are experiencing here at home and around the world,” she explained.
