BRIN inaugurates 4 research professors in various fields, from artificial intelligence to nuclear technology
TIME.CO, Jakarta – National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) once again confirmed its researchers as Research professor Tuesday, September 12, 2023. One of them is Hilman Ferdinandus Pardede with experience in the field of multimedia signal processing and artificial intelligence.
Hilman spoke about the application of high-performance machine learning and deep learning to support the agricultural sector in Indonesia. Machine learning and deep learning are two key and dominant technologies in artificial intelligence today.
Using artificial intelligence in technology intelligent agriculture AND precision agriculture It has great potential to increase agricultural production. The role of AI technology in the agricultural sector can be applied to all aspects of agriculture, including disease identification, food quality, soil conditions and distribution of agricultural products.
Hilman, who has produced 77 scientific papers, points out that Indonesia is an agricultural country. According to him, as an agricultural country, Indonesia has quite large agricultural resources and plantations.
“According to BPS data, the agriculture sector contributed 13.28% to the GDP in 2021,” Hilman said.
An important aspect of the development of the agricultural sector is food defense. He hopes that the application of information technology in the agricultural sector can be a way to achieve this goal.
Technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data can be used to process data in the agricultural sector and produce information that can be used to increase food production or quality. “However, implementation in Indonesia is still very low,” Hilman said.
Therefore, according to Hilman, intensive research is needed on the application of information technology, especially artificial intelligence in the agricultural sector.
Artificial intelligence technology aims to produce computer systems that demonstrate a level of intelligence that can perform work normally done by humans.
Hilman made recommendations to encourage broader application of AI in the agricultural sector. Besides that, creating data related to agriculture is an important issue.
According to Hilman, the government’s role is necessary when it comes to regulations. Finally, he hopes for an ethical formulation in the application of artificial intelligence.
Inauguration of Research Professor – BRIN
BRIN held the inaugural ceremony of the Research Professor’s Oration – BRIN for the second time this year, inaugurating four researchers. The four researchers are Prof. Dr. Cynthia Henny, M.Sc (principal expert researcher at the Limnology and Water Resources Research Centre), Prof. Dr. Ferhat Aziz, M.Sc (principal expert researcher at the Center of research on nuclear reactor technology), Prof. Dr. Eng. Hilman Ferdinandus Pardede, ST, M.Eng (senior principal investigator at the Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security Research Center) and Prof. Dr. Io. Bambang Sayaka, M.Sc (Principal Senior Researcher at the Industrial, Services and Trade Economic Research Centre).
Announcement
BRIN deputy head Amarulla Octavian advised: “Researchers should encourage themselves to achieve more by producing various innovations.”
BRIN head Laksana Tri Handoko said that from the speeches of the four research professors, the audience could see that the researchers showed their contribution, both to the development of science and technology in their fields of expertise, and in efforts to find solutions to the nation’s problems.
“The inauguration of 4 new Research Professors is a source of pride for all of us. This is proof that Indonesian researchers, especially BRIN, can produce research work of international quality. “Of course it can be an example, inspiration and motivation for other researchers to be able to produce quality research results to continue developing to support sustainable development,” Handoko said in his statement.
Other research professors
Cynthia Henny, an expert in the field of limnology, will give a talk on managing lake water quality using a biogeochemical approach. Lakes are hotspots for biogeochemical cycles of chemical elements that determine water quality characteristics.
The balance of biogeochemical processes can be disturbed by the pressure of anthropogenic activities and the impact of climate change which cause changes in the species of dominant chemical compounds and increases in concentrations of unwanted pollutants, so that the quality of lake water is disturbed. The biogeochemical approach as the main controller of water quality is a nature-based solution that can be the best solution to maintain lake water quality and support a healthy and sustainable lake ecosystem.
Next, Ferhat Aziz, an expert in the field of nuclear energy applications, will give his talk on the use of computational modeling and simulation in the development of nuclear reactors. Nuclear power plants are a source of energy that can be relied on and have been widely used in many developed countries.
Therefore, the mastery of nuclear science and technology must be intensified, including by increasing capabilities in the use of calculation-based models and simulations, which can integrate the development of scientific theory and laboratory experimentation more accurately, safely and securely. . Computational simulation capabilities in reactor design are important to prepare for the era of nuclear power plants, which is expected to support the goal of net zero emissions by 2060.
Meanwhile, Bambang Sayaka, an expert in the field of agricultural economics, will give his speech on redesigning the policy for developing the food crop and vegetable seed industry according to market demand. Government intervention through subsidies for food crop seeds, particularly rice, corn and soybean seeds, has been discontinued, but the policy of free assistance in the form of food crops and vegetable seeds continues.
Seed policies for food and vegetable crops should be based on market demand to be more efficient and competitive. It is therefore necessary to redesign the development policy of the food crops and horticultural seeds sector.
