BMKG weather forecast: rain, coastal flooding and high waves in various areas
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Council of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG extension) has released a weather forecast for Thursday, August 31, 2023, which will see parts of Indonesia affected To rain, coastal flooding and high waves.
“Rain accompanied by lightning is expected in Pekanbaru on Thursday. Light intensity rain is likely to occur in Banda Aceh, Tarakan, Jayapura, Mamuju and Medan,” BMKG data says.
The capital of Banjarmasin province in South Kalimantan is believed to be engulfed in smoke. Meanwhile, fog is likely to form in Jambi and Pekanbaru. The air temperature ranges from 20-35°C with the lowest temperature in Bandung. The highest temperatures are recorded in Banjarmasin and Palangkaraya.
Forecast based on impact of heavy rains with alert status in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, North Kalimantan, North Maluku, West Papua and Papua. There are no provinces on alert.
Areas that have the potential for strong winds are NTB, NTT, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi and South Sulawesi.
High wave
BMKG has issued an early warning of high waves potentially occurring in several Indonesian waters from August 31 to September 1, 2023.
Winds in northern Indonesia generally move from the southeast-southwest with wind speeds ranging from 5 to 25 knots, while in southern Indonesia they generally move from east-southeast with wind speeds ranging from 8 at 30 knots.
“The highest wind speeds were observed in the southern part of the Makassar Strait, in the southern part of the Karimata Strait, in the waters of Central Kalimantan, in the Seram Sea, in the waters of Buru Island, in the Indian Ocean at south Sumba and Kupang,” as quoted from the BMKG statement.
This condition causes the opportunity for increased wave heights of up to 2.5-4 meters in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, Indian Ocean south of Banten to East Java, Indian Ocean south of Bali up to NTB, in the western and southern Sunda Strait, the waters of Enggano Island, the southern waters of the Tanimbar Islands, the western and central Arafuru Sea and the Indian Ocean south of Java-Bali.
