BMKG warns of very high waves in the seas of South Yogya, Central Java and West Java

He said the increase in sea wave height was triggered by the wind pattern in the southern part of Indonesia moving predominantly from east-southeast at a speed of 6-20 knots.
According to him, the highest wind speeds were observed in the South Sunda Strait, the southern waters from Banten to West Java, the Karimata Strait, the Java Sea, the southern waters of Kalimantan, the South Makassar Strait and the East Arafuru Sea. “Therefore, we are also issuing a high wave warning in the sea south of West Java-DIY today, valid until Thursday,” he explained.
It said in the notice, that areas that have the potential for very high waves include the waters south of Sukabumi, the waters south of Cianjur, the waters south of Garut, the waters south of Tasikmalaya, the waters south of Pangandaran, the waters south of Cilacap, the waters south of Kebumen, the waters south of Purworejo and the waters south of Yogyakarta.
According to him, very high waves could also occur in the Indian Ocean south of Sukabumi, in the Indian Ocean south of Cianjur, in the Indian Ocean south of Garut, in the Indian Ocean south of Tasikmalaya, in the Indian Ocean at south of Pangandaran, Indian Ocean south of Cilacap, Indian Ocean south of Kebumen, Indian Ocean south of Purworejo and Indian Ocean south of Yogyakarta. “We invite all users of maritime services to pay attention to the risk of high waves on navigation safety”, he underlined.

In this case, he said, a wind speed greater than 15 knots and a wave height greater than 1.25 meters are risky for fishing vessels, while a wind speed greater than 16 knots and a wave height greater than 1.5 meters is risky for barges.
Furthermore, wind speeds above 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters are risky for ferries, while wind speeds above 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters are risky for large vessels such as ships merchant ships and cruise ships.
“For tourists visiting the southern coast (West Java to Yogyakarta) it is recommended not to play in the water or swim for safety because very high waves can occur at any time,” Teguh said.
