BMKG: The vibrations of the Donggala earthquake occurred due to local fault activity

Jakarta (MidLand) – The Agency of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) confirmed that the earthquake vibrations felt by the people of Sirenja, Donggala, Central Sulawesi on Thursday evening came from local fault activity in Tomini Bay, in Paris Moutong regency and had no potential for a tsunami.

This was stated by the head of the Palu Sujabar geophysical station in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

According to him, the residents of Sirenja felt the vibrations of the MMI III scale earthquake, or the vibrations were actually felt in their homes or while the trucks were passing by for a while on Thursday (29/2) evening around 11.34pm WITA.

For this reason, his party appealed to the local community not to worry because the vibrations felt were from a shallow earthquake that occurred due to local fault activity.

According to the analysis of BMKG officials, the epicenter of the earthquake was in Tomini Bay, at a depth of 5 kilometers, which is 7 kilometers northeast of Toribulu, Paris Moutong.

“The model results also found that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4 and did not have the potential for a tsunami,” he said.

However, vigilance still needs to be increased for the population of Sirenja, Donggala and also Toribulu, Paris Moutong, which are located a short distance from the epicenter of the earthquake.

It is important to remember, according to him, that if you feel such vibrations, before returning home it is better to check and make sure that the building you live in is sufficiently resistant to earthquakes, or that there is no damage due to the earthquake. vibrations that jeopardize the stability of the building.
