BMKG: The earthquake on the east coast of Central Maluku has no tsunami potential
MidLand, Jakarta – An earthquake shook the eastern coast of Central Maluku at around 08.29.46 WIB, Wednesday, January 24, 2024. The Agency of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics or BMKG recorded that the earthquake had an updated parameter of magnitude M 5.6.
The head of the BMKG Earthquake Center, Daryono, said the earthquake on the east coast of North Maluku does not have the potential for a tsunami. This earthquake was tectonic and the epicenter was at coordinates 6.22 south latitude and 130.32 east longitude. The exact location is in the sea at a distance of 223 kilometers northwest of Tanimbar at a depth of 123 kilometers.
“Paying attention to the location of the epicenter and its depth, the earthquake that occurred was a medium-sized earthquake due to rock deformation activity in the Banda plate,” Daryono said in a statement released Wednesday morning, 24 January 2024.

Daryono said the analysis results showed that the earthquake had an oblique-fault motion mechanism. “This earthquake was felt in Kaimana and Saumlaki with an intensity scale of II MMI or only a few people felt it,” Daryono said.
Daryono appealed to the public to always be careful and stay away from buildings that could suffer damage during an earthquake. “As of 08:50 WIB, BMKG has not detected any aftershocks or aftershock activity. The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by false rumours,” he added.
