BMKG reminds potential hydrometeorological disasters in NTT until the beginning of the new year

MidLand, Jakarta – Agency of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics o BMKG recalled the risk of hydrometeorological disasters in some areas of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province that entered the rainy season during the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 periods.

“Be careful of the risk of rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds that can cause floods and landslides,” said the head of the El Tari Kupang meteorological station Sti Nenotek in Kupang, Monday, December 25, 2023.

He explained that some areas of the NTT have entered the rainy season, namely West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Ngada, Nagekeo, West Sumba, Central Sumba, East Sumba, Sabu, North Central Timor, Belu and Malacca.

According to the weather forecast valid until January 2, 2024, rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is expected in the 12 districts.

BMKG urges local governments, related sectors and the community to use the early warning information issued by BMKG as a reference to take timely action.

Residents living in steep, steep areas or on cliffs should be aware of the potential risk of landslides during heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, people carrying out activities outside their homes are advised to pay attention to road conditions during heavy rain and strong winds to avoid potential dangers of flooding and falling trees.

Sti said that the peak of the rainy season in the NTT is expected in February 2024. Therefore, he recommended the importance of disseminating climate information and education and anticipating disasters during the rainy season so that people can avoid the threat of natural disasters.
