BMKG forecasts rain and coastal flooding when Blue Moon and tropical cyclones Saola and Hakui are observed
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Council of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG extension) released a weather forecast for Wednesday, August 30, 2023, during the Blue Moon, with parts of Indonesia affected To rainhigh waves and coastal flooding. The BMKG also monitors tropical cyclones in the Philippine Sea.
Heavy rain is expected in Medan on Wednesday. Light rain is likely to occur in Banda Aceh, Tarakan, Tanjung Pinang, Ambon, Ternate, Manokwari and Pekanbaru.
BMKG monitors the movement of tropical cyclones Saola and Haikui near Indonesia. “Both were observed in the Philippine Sea, moving away from Indonesian territory,” the BMKG said.
Tropical Cyclone Saola’s intensity is estimated to persist for the next 24 hours and move from west to northwest. Meanwhile, tropical cyclone Haikui is estimated to increase in intensity over the next 24 hours and move northwestward.
The provincial capitals of Jambi and Pekanbaru are expected to be shrouded in fog. The air temperature ranges from 18-35°C with the lowest temperature in Bandung. The highest temperatures are recorded in Banjarmasin and Palangkaraya.
Forecast based on impact of heavy rains with alert status in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, North Kalimantan, North Maluku, West Papua and Papua. There are no provinces on alert.
Areas with the potential for high winds are NTB, NTT, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and Maluku.
High wave
BMKG issued an early warning on high waves that could potentially occur in several Indonesian waters on 30-31 August 2023.
The wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves southeast-southwest with wind speeds ranging from 8 to 25 knots. While in the southern part of Indonesia it generally moves from east-southeast with wind speeds between 8 and 25 knots. The highest wind speeds were observed in the waters of the Bitung-Sitaro Islands, the southern part of the Makassar Strait, the Seram Sea and the Arafuru Sea.
This condition leads to the possibility of an increase in high waves of up to 2.5-4 meters in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra and in the Indian Ocean south of Java-Bali.

With the Blue Moon event occurring on August 30, several areas have the potential to experience coastal flooding (rob Floods), namely:
