BMKG: Beware of waves up to 4 meters high in Nias and Mentawai
MidLand, Jakarta – Council of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) released early warning high wave which may occur in several Indonesian waters on March 7-8, 2024.
BMKG meteorologist Ivana Gabriella said wind patterns in northern Indonesia generally move from the northeast-east with wind speeds ranging from 6 to 25 knots, while in southern Indonesia they generally move from the south-east west – west with speed of 4 – 20 knots.
“The highest wind speeds were observed in waters west of Aceh – Mentawai Islands, waters west of Bengkulu – Lampung, Sunda Strait, Sulawesi Sea, waters north of Sangihe Islands,” Ivana said in a statement written, Thursday 7 March 2024.
This condition, Ivana explained, causes the possibility of an increase in waves up to 1.25 – 2.5 meters in the waters west of Aceh, waters west of Simeulue Island – Mentawai Islands, waters of Enggano Island , Bengkulu waters – west of Lampung, Western India Aceh Ocean, Indian Ocean West Lampung, southern Lampung Bay, western and southern Sunda Strait, southern waters Banten – Eastern Java, southern waters Bali – Sumba Island, Bali Strait Southern – Lombok – Alas, Southern Indian Ocean Banten – NTT, Northern Makassar Strait, Sulawesi Sea, waters of the Sangihe Islands – Talaud Islands, waters of the Sitaro Islands – Bitung, waters of North Sulawesi, Molucca Sea, waters of Northern Banggai , northern and eastern waters of Halmahera, Halmahera Sea, northern waters of West Papua – Papua, North Pacific Ocean Halmahera – Papua.
“Meanwhile, waves in the higher range of 2.5 – 4 meters may occur in the Western Indian Ocean, Nias Islands, Western Indian Ocean, Mentawai Islands, Western Indian Ocean, Bengkulu,” he said Ivana.
