Austrian Chancellor Calls for Reduction of Russian-Ukrainian Tensions Following ZNPP Incident
VIENNA (MidLand) – Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer called for a reduction of tension and negotiations after the attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) on Sunday evening (8/11), but did not mention that the plant was attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
On Sunday evening, the ZNPP said that as a result of the shelling of Ukrainian troops, a fire broke out in the area of the ZNPP cooling tower.
It was stated that the fire did not affect the operation of the plant in any way, as all six units in the facility were in “cold shutdown”.
The radiation background at the nuclear power plant site, health protection zone and observation zone remains normal.
“Attacks on nuclear infrastructure are extremely dangerous and aggravate the situation. Today’s accident at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant confirms the important role of @iaeaorg and the need to continue the dialogue initiated at the Bürgenstock peace summit. De-escalation and talks are needed!” Nehammer said in X.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Sunday that its experts at the ZNPP had received information from the plant about a suspected UAV attack on one of the plant’s cooling towers.
Experts also noticed thick black smoke coming from the northern part of the NPPZ after a series of explosions during the night, the IAEA added.
