Ashura Day, this practice and fasting are recommended by Islam
Jakarta (MidLand) – Ashura day is a glorious Islamic day that Muslims always look forward to. Where this day is very blessed and it is a special thing to get rewards and blessings from Allah SWT.
What practices are recommended on the day of Ashura?
On the day of Ashura or the 10th of Muharram, Muslims are encouraged to recite the Ashura prayer to remember the greatness of Allah SWT, to be grateful for blessings given, and to ask for forgiveness for sins committed.
The following is the pronunciation of the Ashura prayer, citing the MUI and other sources:
Subhanallahi Allah, the Lord, has sent me to the mountain of the mountain of the mablaghar, and to the adadan of the ni’ami of the zinatal ‘arsyi.
meaning: Glory to Allah full as the scales, perfect as knowledge, full of pleasure, many blessings and great as the scales of arsh.
In the book Hasyiyatul Jamal ‘ala Syarhil Manhaj” by Sheikh Sulaiman Al-Jamal it is stated: “Whoever reads this prayer on the day of Ashura, his heart will certainly not die that year. Whoever dies, Allah will not inspire him to read this prayer.”
Additionally, Muslims are encouraged to fast when the 10th of Muharram comes. For Muslims who do so, minor sins from the previous year can be forgiven by fasting on the day of Ashura.
The forgiveness of sins during the Ashura fast is explained in a hadith narrated by Muslims, the Prophet said: “As for the fast on the day of Ashura, I pray to God that this fast may erase the sins of the previous year (HR Muslim no 1162).
According to Imam an-Nawawi (w 676 H), the sins mentioned in the above hadith are minor sins, or their major sins are reduced or their rank is elevated. (an-Nawawi, al-Minhaj Syarh Sahih Muslim, juz 8, p. 51)
According to the intention of the Ashura fast Sunnah:
Nawaitu Shauma Ghadin ‘Adai Sunnah Ashura Lillahi Ta’ala.
Meaning: “I intend to fast the Sunnah of Ashura tomorrow because of Allah SWT.”
Not only prayer and fasting, according to scholars there are several other worship practices that are organized on the day of Ashura.
The practice is found in the poetry of the book Kanzun Naja was Surur Fi Ad’iyyati Tasyrahus Shudur by Sheikh Abdul Hamid, as follows.
“There are ten practices in the month of ‘Ashura, with the addition of two more perfect practices. Fasting, praying, maintaining friendship, visiting the pious, visiting the sick, and closing the eyes. Rubbing the heads of orphans, giving alms and bathing, increasing the family’s livelihood, cutting nails, reading Surat al-Ikhlas 1000 times.”
Muslims always look forward to the day of Ashura to gain its benefits as they get closer to Allah SWT through prayer and other acts of worship. However, this does not mean that worship other than the day of Ashura does not receive the blessings of Allah SWT.
