APJII: Beware of the fate of local ISPs even if Starlink is present in Indonesia

Jakarta (MidLand) – The Indonesian Association of Internet Service Providers (APJII) called on the government to continue to pay attention to the fate Internet service provider (local ISP), although in Indonesia there is the Starlink satellite internet service managed by Elon Musk.

“APJII encourages that at least if there are new things, they do not harm the existing ecosystem. “However, there are many local entrepreneurs who need to be protected, their existence and so on,” said APJII President General Muhammad Arif after attending APJII’s 28th anniversary celebration in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Responding to the follow-up to Starlink’s presence, Arif said Indonesia cannot reject the development of new technologies present in society. Furthermore, now, one of the communication problems to be addressed is related to connectivity.

According to him, the presence of Starlink is an effort to solve this problem.

During its development, APJII also provided assistance to Starlink in obtaining permits as a legal ISP and diligently paying taxes.

“So, first of all, APJII encourages cooperation, if there is good service, let’s open good cooperation together reseller “Or B2B collaboration is up to the company, but there is still room for them to work together, even if they can still sell retail or direct,” he said.

However, the government, especially the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo), must not abandon local ISPs that have contributed to state revenue.

It is also expected that the government will be able to identify national interests as the main focus of network infrastructure development.

On the other hand, Arif also revealed that he encouraged Starlink to become a member of APJII and a legal communication service provider. He said the registration process is already underway and will probably be formalized in the near future.

“It should be soon, again on the process Yes, maybe next month they will become members. As far as I know, there are 1,044 ISPs (who are members of APJII) and they are registered reseller “There are already 20,000,” Arif said.

Earlier, Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi said that Elon Musk would meet President Joko Widodo on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) event in Bali.

“(Elon Musk) wants to meet the president in Bali,” Budi said.

However, Budi did not reveal details about what the president would discuss with the owner of satellite internet service Starlink.

Regarding the potential for cooperation between the Indonesian government and the Starlink service, Budi said his party will discuss it further at a working meeting.

“Wait for the president’s conversation with Gentleman Elon Musk, if he attends,” Budi said.
