Agriculture Minister Encourages Family-Scale Horticultural Management
By using the land around the house, we can create a sustainable food source, while providing additional income to the family.
Jakarta (MidLand) – Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman encourages the use of horticultural products at home scale to improve community economy, as well as support local growth with more affordable and sustainable methods.
“By using the land around the house, we can create a sustainable food source, as well as provide additional income to the family,” the Agriculture Minister said on Thursday while opening the Household Scale Horticultural Commodity Management event in Makassar.
In collaboration with the Indonesian Cabinet Era Advanced Solidarity Action Organization (OASE KIM), the Minister of Agriculture said that managing horticultural products through the Sustainable Food Gardens (P2L) program could improve community economy, reduce household expenses, and have the potential to increase family income.
The Minister of Agriculture also said that using gardens as a food source is a simple and very effective way to achieve food security starting from the household level.
“It is therefore important to maximize the potential of the home garden as a food source,” Amran said in his statement in Jakarta.
By continuing to scale up programs like this one, the Agriculture Minister continued, people will be able to reduce household costs and be more independent in meeting their food needs.
The Minister of Agriculture also said that this program has the potential to open up new business opportunities that can improve the family economy.
According to him, if all housewives and OASE were to take action to use existing gardens to grow food, they could reduce their expenses by up to IDR 2 million per month.
“If 280 million (Indonesian population) is divided by 4, it means there are 70 million families. If this number is multiplied by 2 million, it means we can save up to IDR 1.4 trillion, which is half of our APBN,” the Agriculture Minister explained.
In the presence of hundreds of participants, ranging from housewives, Forkopimda, PKK, Dharma Pertiwi, to women farmers’ groups, Mrs. Iriana Jokowi will also participate in this activity.
In addition to having the opportunity to chat with the First Lady, attendees will also receive training and guidance on horticultural management such as backyard hydroponics, backyard soil optimization, and catfish biofloc.
This activity also featured several expert and experienced speakers in the field of horticulture, so as to encourage the participants to use every inch of land to produce quality food products.
“So that later the participants will not only be able to use the land to meet the needs of their families, but will also have the potential to improve the economy of the community,” the Minister of Agriculture said.
One of the participants, who is also the secretary of the PKK mobilization team of South Sulawesi province, Zulfitriani, appreciated and welcomed this activity.
She admitted that this event has been able to encourage the productivity of housewives who use their home gardens as a source of food.
“The materials provided can increase the independence and productivity of housewives in using their gardens. Our team in South Sulawesi was very enthusiastic and actively asked how to produce biofloc and hydroponics,” said Zulfitriani.
Another participant who is also the head of the PKK mobilization team of Bulukumba regency, Andi Herfida Muchtar, assessed that the activity was very positive and helpful in providing very applicable knowledge, such as cultivation techniques and types of plants suitable for garden cultivation.
“This event was very helpful to us, they gave us information on how to use free land, even those who don’t have it, they gave us ideas on how to use the backyard so that it remains productive for our daily needs,” Andi said.
