Against climate change, ITS organizes an action to plant trees followed by 8,000 participants

TIME.CO, Jakarta – November 10 Institute of Technology (HIS) held an ITS Climate Action (ICA) activity on Saturday 12 August 2023. ITS Chancellor Mochamad Ashari explained this activity in the context of ITS 63rd anniversary and a form of ITS concern for climate change.

“Everyone must know the current needs of the world to contribute to the fight against climate change,” said the ITS website on Sunday, August 13, 2023.

This electrical engineering professor added that ITS’ concern for the environment goes beyond just ICA. According to him, ITS also contributes to research that also aims to combat climate change, such as the research and development of electric vehicles that do not emit greenhouse gases.

ITS 63rd Anniversary Committee Chairman I Ketut Eddy Purnama explained that the ICA event took place in the form of tree planting. This should reduce the carbon footprint to combat climate change.

This activity should create a cleaner ITS environment and a more comfortable learning atmosphere. “More than 60 trees planted is a collaboration between ITS and Grab Indonesia and Virama Karya,” she said.

At the same time, the Chancellor of ITS and Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, launched the Eklim application which everyone can access via the eklim.its.ac.id page. The climate application consists of four activities that can be followed, namely mass cleaning, tree planting, cycling and healthy walking. This healthy cycling and walking activity encourages all residents to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.

Up until the activity closes at 11:00 WIB, at least 8,392 people have been registered as participating in this activity. They consist of new students taking part in the 2023 Integralistic Generation (Gerigi) event series, alumni, faculty and educational staff.

The waste collected from this activity will be further processed by the ITS Environmental Engineering Department. This activity is expected to set a record for the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) as the mass cleanup activity with the largest number of participants in Indonesia.
