MidLand, Jakarta – The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, presented the award Adipura Kencana 2023 to five cities/districts deemed to demonstrate innovative and sustainable environmental management performance. This year, the five districts/cities selected as recipients of the highest Adipura award are Balikpapan City, Surabaya City, Bontang City, Bitung City and Ciamis Regency.
Minister Siti said the Adipura program is the major step towards mitigating climate change. According to him, this program should also be encouraged to be a control tool greenhouse gas emissions from waste management.
Siti highlighted the fire at the final processing site (TPA) and the open burning of waste (open combustion). “An important note to bring forward in the future regarding the threat of pollution from waste management activities which can produce quite high greenhouse gas emissions, i.e. above 100 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent,” he said Tuesday 5 March 2024 .
Apart from this, Minister Siti said, the Adipura premium also represents an effort to reduce
threat from plastic waste which pollutes land, rivers, lakes and seas. Encourage effective management of plastic waste across government, regional government, business and various elements of society.
“Focus on efforts to prevent and overcome plastic waste towards reaching a global agreement on the International Legally Binding Instrument on Plastic Pollution (ILBI) by the end of 2024, as discussed in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC),” he stated Siti.

To address all the above challenges, Minister Siti explained that the Adipura Assessment 2023 has been developed with the strategic functions and roles of each district and city government. The reference is Law number 18 of 2008 on the matter
Waste Management and in an effort to achieve national policy and strategic objectives for the management of household waste and similar types of household waste (Jakstranas) in accordance with Presidential Regulation number 97 of 2017.
The presidential decree mandates 100% waste management through 30% waste reduction and 70% waste management by 2025. “And, more importantly, in 2023 we will begin to encourage the implementation of a waste management system
integrated and sustainable from upstream to downstream in neighborhoods/cities to achieve Zero Waste Zero Emission; “In the context of climate action, Indonesia achieves the national NDC target for 2030,” said Minister Siti.
