Actor Kenneth Mitchell died at age 49 from ALS

Jakarta (MidLand) – Kenneth Mitchell, known for his various roles in “Star Trek: Discovery”, died on Saturday at the age of 49 from complications due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

“For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of difficult challenges due to ALS. And in true Ken fashion, he rose above it all with grace and commitment, living a full and joyful life in every moment,” read a statement on Mitchell’s official Instagram page, as written by the Variety page, Sunday (25/ 2 ).

ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a disease of the nervous system that weakens muscles and affects physical function.

“He lived by the principle that every day is a gift and you never walk alone,” the article continued.

In “Star Trek: Discovery,” Mitchell played the Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio. He also voiced several characters in an episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”

Other notable credits include playing Carol Danvers’ father in “Captain Marvel” and an Olympian in “Miracle.” Mitchell also appeared in “Jericho,” “The Astronaut Wives Club,” “Ghost Whisperer” and “Switched at Birth.”

In 2020, Mitchell announced to People magazine that he was diagnosed with ALS in 2018. The actor has been using a wheelchair since 2019.

“I think, as time goes on, it will become a theme for us to accept it gracefully,” he said at the time.

“Trying to see the beauty in it. I’ll never forget it, one of my co-stars on ‘Star Trek’ said, because they had gone through difficult times with illnesses and other things, and I remember them communicating with me, saying, ‘You have a choice. “You can look at this in different ways, but maybe try to see it as a gift where you can experience life in a way that most people don’t,” Mitchell said.

He also revealed to People that he had to give up a lead role in a TV show, which required him to move to Newfoundland.

“As the protagonist of the show, I really want that responsibility. But in the end it wasn’t the right thing to continue,” she said.
