5.3 Magnitude Earthquake rocks Aru Islands, Moluccas, BMKG: Felt at Kaimana and Tual
MidLand, Jakarta – Council of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) relationship earthquake Tectonics shook the Aru Islands region, Moluccas, on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 06.57.00 WIB.

“Paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to the deformation activity of the earth’s crust rocks in the Aru Graben area,” Daryono said .
“The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake had a downward motion mechanism combined with a horizontal motion (oblique normal fault),” he added.

According to the estimated shakemap, this earthquake caused tremors in the areas of Dobo, Kaimana and Tual with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, i.e. vibrations were felt by several people, light hanging objects were swinging.
Model results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami.
“Up until 07:20 WIB, BMKG monitoring results had not shown any aftershock activity,” Daryono said.
