5.3 magnitude earthquake in the Selayar Islands due to movement on the Indo-Australian plate
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG extension) states have occurred earthquake magnitude 5.3 tectonics Monday 21 August 2023 at 17.01.23 WIB on the south coast of the Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi.
According to the head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono said that the earthquake occurred due to a mechanism slab shot on the Indo-Australian plate. “This earthquake has a downward or normal motion mechanism guilt,” he said in his statement on Monday, Aug. 21, 2023.
This earthquake was centered in the sea at a distance of 47 km south of Pasimasunggu, Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi at a depth of 492 km.
Based on the estimated aftershock map, this earthquake shook Pasimasunggu, Pasimarannu, East Pasimasunggu and Selayar islands with an intensity scale of III MMI. The vibes felt real in the house. Feel the vibration as if a truck is passing by.
Based on provisional data, the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake has not yet been reported. The model results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami. Also, as of 1715 WIB, the results of the BMKG monitoring had shown no aftershock activity.

Daryono asked residents to remain calm and not be swayed by matters whose truth cannot be justified. He also asked to avoid buildings cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
