4 orangutans released into the wild in Muara Wahau, East Kalimantan, open the door of hope

MidLand, Jakarta – The East Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency or BKSDA has released four orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus morio) in Kehje Sewen Forest in Muara Wahau, eastern Kutai.

“We brought four individuals to the northern part of the forest,” East Kalimantan BKSDA head Ari Wibawanto said on Saturday, November 11, 2023.

On Thursday 11 September, the four orangutans aged between 13 and 33 were taken by car from Samboja Lestari, an orangutan rehabilitation cage and care facility operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation in Samboja, Kutai Kartanegara, at Juq Kehje Swen release island in Muara Wahau.

The Samboja-Muara Wahau journey takes no less than 18 hours. Later, from Juq, the cages were transported by helicopter to the northern part of Kehje Sewen forest, Ari Wibawanto said.

“With this step, we are not only releasing orangutans into their natural habitat, but we are also opening the door to hope for the survival of this species and the ecosystem in which they live,” Ari said.

Orangutans are known as animals that give life to other animals or plants. By nesting, for example, orangutans open the canopy of trees slightly, allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor and giving young trees that are not yet tall the opportunity to be directly exposed to sunlight, which is important for the process of photosynthesis.

Orangutans are also seed spreaders of the fruits they eat because they can roam for miles in the forest a day.

“For this reason, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry continues to make efforts to save and protect orangutans, advancing the conservation of these priceless wild animals,” said Ari Wibawanto.

A few days before the release in East Kalimantan, BKSDA also carried out a release in Central Kalimantan with a total of eight orangutans released in Bukit Batikap Protected Forest in Gunung Mas Regency, a 3-day, 2-night drive from Nyaru Menteng near Palangkaraya.

This release is the 42nd time in Indonesia Kalimantan Central and 26 in East Kalimantan. This release brings the number of orangutans released in Bukit Batikap Protected Forest to 198 individuals and in Kehje Sewen Forest to 130 individuals.
