When Jokowi tested Papuan students with the gas counting method

MidLand, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo discussed and tested the mathematical skills of Papuan students during his visit to Biak, Papua. Together with approximately 177 elementary and middle school students, Jokowi test the ability to calculate quickly using the gasing method introduced by Yohanes Surya.

“Children are happy to learn to count, let me try,” Jokowi said, quoted by the Presidential Secretariat YouTube, Wednesday, November 22, 2023.

Jokowi also asked math questions and promised bicycles to children who could answer them. “Is 27 plus 78 the same?”

The children present also raised their hands. Jokowi chose a child sitting not far from him to respond. “105, sir,” responded Aquila, a junior at Biak Middle School.

Because he answered correctly, Aquila also received a bicycle from Jokowi, which he greeted cheerfully. Panita Tenoye, a Nabire Primary School student, also received a bicycle for successfully answering the 51×12 multiplication question.

After the calculus test, Jokowi gave the students the opportunity to ask him questions. One of the elementary school students named Joshua also asked a question. “If I want to build Papua, where should I start?” He said.

Jokowi also commented that this is a difficult question. “Why is this a difficult question?”

“Starting from learning, the children’s job is to learn, from there, so that everyone can be smart and build Papua together,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi also gifted a bicycle to Joshua, which he said asked a good question. I gave him a bicycle,” he said.

Continuing his message, Jokowi said Papuan children could emulate his Papuan son Billy Mambrasar who succeeded in education. Billy is now the president’s special staff.

“Who wants to go to school like brother Billy Mambrasar? Because that means learning,” Jokowi said.

Top counting method

The maximum counting method was introduced by academician Yohanes Surya. According to him, from the first time teaching counting was like achieving a goal five districts.

“Now, with the development of the spinning top method in Papua, it has reached 19 districts across Papua,” Yohanes said.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, Yohanes said the gassing counting method has reached 81 districts and 2.5 million children have learned it. “We continue to teach the spinning top method to children all over Indonesia,” he said.

The main method is short for easy, fun and enjoyable. Quoting yohanessurya.com, as the name suggests, this method uses a unique way to make it easier for children to work on math problems.

Tops can make a child able to understand math problems by leaning (counting by heart). Besides that, this method encourages children to get used to counting backwards. For example, to add two digits, start with the largest unit.
