Unnes’ response to a student who allegedly committed suicide from the 4th floor of Paragon Mall
TIME.CO, Jakarta -Semarang State University (Unnes) met the family of NJW, a student of Unnes Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, who died at Paragon Mall in Semarang on Tuesday evening, October 10, 2023. Unnes Public Relations Officer Rahmat Petuguran said the campus was saddened by this incident.
“Unnes expresses its condolences on the passing of NJW’s son. Representatives of Unnes last night met the family of the deceased at Dr. Kariadi Hospital,” he said on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
Unnes’ representatives, he said, were greeted by the family of NJW’s late mother and uncle. As a form of concern and to ease the burden on the family, Rahmat said, Unnes through the vice dean for academic and student affairs, Zaenal Abidin, provided assistance by managing the costs of burial of the body and delivery of the body to Cilacap.
“The family said they were willing to let NJW’s son go. They also refused to perform an autopsy. Earlier, around 02:30 WIB in the morning, NJW’s body was taken by the family to be buried in Cilacap,” he said.
Rahmat added that Unnes already has a counseling center at the Institute for Education and Professional Development (LPPP) that provides counseling services to students.
“Students are provided with counseling services, both regarding academics, career development and personal issues,” he said.

On the fourth floor of the car park, police found a bag belonging to the victim NJW, a resident of Ngaliyan, Semarang, a student card and a letter containing an apology to the family.
It is currently suspected that the victim committed suicide. However, the exact cause of the accident is still under police investigation.
