Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT about a year ago, Google has raced to produce artificial intelligence software that rivals what the Microsoft-backed company (MSFT.O) is introducing.
Google added some of the technology from the new Gemini model to its AI assistant Bard on Wednesday and said it plans to release the most advanced version of Gemini via Bard early next year.
Alphabet says it is making three versions of Gemini, each designed to use different amounts of processing power. The more powerful version is designed to work in data centers, while the smaller version will work efficiently on mobile devices, the company said.
Gemini is the largest AI model ever created by the company’s Google DeepMind AI unit, but it is “much” cheaper to serve users than the company’s previous, larger models, Eli Collins told reporters , vice president of DeepMind product.

“So not only is it more capable, but it’s also much more efficient,” Collins said. The latest models still require a large amount of computing power to train them, but Google continues to improve the process, he added.
Alphabet also announced a new generation of purpose-built AI chips, or tensor processing units (TPU). The v5p Cloud TPU is designed for training large AI models and is bundled in an 8,960 chip pod.
The new version of the client processor can train large language models nearly three times faster than the previous generation. Chip was made available to developers in “preview” on Wednesday, the company said.
