Severe air pollution in Jakarta, DPR members: Don’t underestimate
TIME.CO, Jakarta – House of Representatives Committee IX member Saleh Partaonan Daulay suggested the government do a mapping to find out which areas have levels air pollution high as one of short-term management efforts.
According to him, the current high level of air pollution is not only in Jakarta but has spread to various parts of Indonesia.
“So, you cannot focus on Jakarta only. As it cannot be biased, the management must be comprehensive and good,” Saleh said by telephone in Jakarta on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
According to him, based on the air monitoring website IQAir, on Tuesday, August 16, 2023, the order of the most polluted cities/regencies is West Kalimantan, with a particulate matter (PM) level of 2.5 of 191 ug/m3 , then South Tangerang (156 ug/m3), Kota Serang (150 ug/m3), Tangerang City (134 ug/m3), Jambi (119 ug/m3), Bandung (111 ug/m3) and seventh place is Jakarta City (109 ug/m3 ).
Saleh said there are many factors causing high pollution in various regions, including transportation, power plants, industrial activities and the El Nino phenomenon.
West Kalimantan, which has a small population of motor vehicles, is reported to have the highest level of pollution in Indonesia. Therefore, as a member of the commission responsible for health, his party has asked the government to carry out a comprehensive assessment and establish appropriate policies, both in the short and long term.
“This air pollution has an impact on society. Now the number of flu patients is very high. That’s why you can’t take it lightly,” he said.
The government, he continued, must take preventive measures against every factor contributing to this high air pollution throughout Indonesia.

The causes of air pollution are different for each region
He added that the causes of pollution in each region may be different, so the approach to the solution must be adapted to the conditions of each region, for example West Kalimantan, where the population of motor vehicles is low, but the activity mining is very high and electricity supply is from coal (PLTU), obviously the solution is different from Jakarta.
Earlier, National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) professor of meteorology and climatology Edvin Aldrian revealed that one of the causes of increasingly dense air pollution recently was related to the El Nino phenomenon.
“That’s true (it has something to do with El Nino). So, it’s usually because it’s related to forest fires,” he said.
This condition, according to Edvin, is exacerbated by infrequent rainfall in an area so that there is no wet deposition or a major process of removing gases and particles from atmosphereso there are many pollutants in the air.
