Rise of phishing, Kaspersky: Cybercriminals will always follow the trends
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Kaspersky 2023 has seen an increase in attacks phishing where the scammer does not address the actual phishing attack immediately, but only after several introductory emails in which there is an active correspondence with the victim.
According to Kaspersky, this trend is likely to continue. New tricks are also likely to emerge in the corporate sector in 2023, with attacks that will bring significant benefits to attackers.
“Cybercriminal will always follow the trend. They know what hot topics they can ride effectively on. It is a social engineering technique that plays on the human mind. That’s why it’s hard to refuse to click on unfamiliar links, which can ultimately prove to be dangerous for us,” said Adrian Hia, managing director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky on Monday, August 7, 2023.
Phishing is a term you hear a lot these days. This is a cybercriminal infiltration technique, due to its simplicity and effectiveness. Basically, phishing is a type of Internet crime that attempts to obtain user credentials through deception. This includes stealing your passwords, credit card numbers, bank account details and other sensitive information.
For example, in 2022, top phishing topics are monitored by Kaspersky experts using scenarios such as compensation funds, bonuses and even refunds. Bonuses and compensation funds are hard to deny in times of crisis and instability, which is why financial assistance is often used by scammers to trick users and steal their money.
Promotional campaigns of major banks are a popular bait in 2022. Visitors to fake web pages are offered to accept a one-time payment or participate in a paid service quality survey.
In Muslim-majority countries, for example, there are scenarios of scams such as the delivery of charity parcels, allegedly as part of the Ramadan Assistance program which aims to help low-income families during the month of Ramadan. In the month of Ramadan, the price of groceries and household products tends to rise.

Rising utility rates and rising natural resource prices have prompted several governments to begin discussing compensation for residents. Payment notifications can be posted by post, email or as a text message.
Cybercriminals try to take advantage of the situation by creating web pages that mimic government websites, promising money to cover utility payments or compensation costs. Sometimes visitors are asked to provide personal data under the guise of verifying their eligibility or completing a questionnaire.
In Singapore, scammers offer a refund of the cost of water supply, allegedly due to double billing. An energy or resource crisis was not used as a pretext in this particular case, but a refund was still offered on behalf of the water supply authority.
“Last year our solution blocked over 43 million phishing attacks against our users in Southeast Asia. Obviously, phishing is a tool frequently used by cybercriminals. By its nature, it requires your participation, simply by clicking a link or opening a file. Therefore it is very important that everyone knows how phishing actually works in order to avoid falling prey to it,” added Hia.
