Preparing for Gita Bahana Nusantara’s appearance at Indonesian Independence Day Event and Independence Concert
TIME.CO, Jakarta – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) through the General Directorate of Culture is preparing 199 young people from 33 provinces across Indonesia this year to perform at the 78th Birthday Celebration (HUT ) of the Republic of Indonesia ( RI) at Merdeka Palace on 17 August. According to the Ministry of Education and Culture website, Gita Bahana Nusantara is a team choir which had 199 young people. They consist of 68 teams the orchestra and 131 choir group members.
Ministry of Education and Culture Director of Development and Utilization of Culture Irini Dewi Wanti said the GBN team will undergo a training camp from August 3 to 19. Currently, the GBN team is having a training camp in Wisma Kinasih, Depok, West Java.
“Practice takes place in groups for members with soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices. Group practice is also performed by orchestra members in the ethnic, brass and string combo sections. The groups then met in a joint exercise,” he said in his statement on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023.
20 years of GBN work
Irini explained that this year marked 20 years of GBN’s presence and participation in state demonstrations. To commemorate this, GBN will appear in front of the wider community at the 2023 Gita Bahana Nusantara Independence Concert.
“The concert is themed ‘Breakthrough’ to be held at Fatahillah Museum, Kota Tua, Jakarta on 12th August 2023,” Irina said.
As for the ceremony to commemorate the seconds of Indonesian Proclamation of Independence on 17 August 2023 at Merdeka Palace, there will be a nice collaboration between GBN and Ziva Magnolya and Adikara. Meanwhile, at the Independence Concert, GBN will present a collaboration with Novia Bachmid and a poetry reading by Deni Maulana, FLS2N Champion.

At the Palace, GBN will perform nine songs, namely Rayuan Kelapa Island, Negeriku, Satria Indonesia, Nusantara II, Emerald of the Equator, Youth, Merdeka Day and a medley of Indonesian songs, along with arrangements incorporating Nusantara ethnic elements into the instruments such as flutes, sape, drums, tehyan a talempong.
At its peak, GBN will present a special performance with Putri Ariani performing the song Melati Suci. Acting as GBN conductor this time is Eunice Tong, a female conductor graduate of Westminster Choir College, who has performed with the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra.

GBN is an orchestra and choir group made up of young people aged between 16 and 23 from all provinces of Indonesia who channel their talents and potential into the field of music. They are the best young musicians and singers from all provinces of Indonesia who have academic ability, above average musical techniques and ability to read notation. After being selected through a rigorous audition, they will be featured in important state moments, especially the commemoration of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.
According to its meaning, GBN is made up of words that are rooted in Indonesian culture. Gita comes from Sanskrit meaning song or chant. The materials are echoes, sounds, loud sounds. Meanwhile, Nusantara is the designation of the Indonesian archipelago.
Overall, GBN means blaring song from all over Indonesia. In the context and scope of its presence, GBN is a form of “mini Indonesia” in a musical orchestration.
