MidLand, Jakarta – Nepalwhich has a population of nearly 30 million people, banned it Tick tockto which the short video giant belongs ByteDance with more than one billion active users worldwide.
The decision came shortly after the Himalayan country introduced rules requiring social platforms to register with the local government.
“TikTok’s refusal to curb hateful content impacts social harmony,” according to a New York Times report cited by TechCrunch, Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023.
In particular, Nepali officials fear that TikTok content incites religious hatred, violence and sexual harassment and has led to offline clashes, forcing curfews and police deployment.
TikTok’s rapid rise has met resistance as countries around the world have become increasingly wary of China’s influence. The app lost significant market share in 2021 after India banned it among dozens of Chinese internet services, including messaging giant WeChat, amid rising border tensions between the two countries.
