Megawati appoints three-star general deputy head of BRIN
TIME.CO, Jakarta – President of the Steering Committee of the National Agency for Research and Innovation or BRIN Megavati Soekarnoputri has appointed high-ranking military officer Amarulla Octavian to the position of deputy head of the National Research and Innovation Agency to improve the internal affairs of the government’s research and technology institute.
Amarulla said the internal agreement conveyed by Megawati had to be adapted to the direction of the head of the National Research and Innovation Agency, Laksana Tri Handoko.
“The directives of the President of the Steering Committee relate to internal organizational structures. So for internal BRIN, then there will be arrangements for the Regional Research and Innovation Agency, but all this will have to be in accordance with the indications of the Head of the BRIN Area,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday, August 3, 2023, quoted by Antara.
Amarulla said that after becoming deputy head of BRIN, he prioritized the organization and working procedures that had been prepared earlier. The priorities are in accordance with the organization and working procedures in BRIN, as well as the completion of the priority programs which have been prepared by BRIN.
The three-star general admits he won’t prioritize research on the military side only after serving as deputy chief of BRIN, even if he is from the Indonesian Navy.
According to him, the most important research is that it can benefit mankind, as when researchers created cell phones and cameras.
“The program is not always aimed solely at military interests. There is a lot of military technology that can actually be converted into commercial technology. This cell phone was military technology. Internet, computers and cameras, but after that, because there was no war, it was intended for human well-being,” said Amarulla.
He further said that he does not discriminate between military technology or not, because the most important thing is that it can benefit the society, the state and mankind.

Amarulla revealed that atomic energy, which was used as a killing tool during the world war, it turns out that after being used for so long, statistically 80% of it is for human welfare. Nuclear for agriculture, cosmetics, health and so on.
“Sometimes people see nuclear technology as scary, even though there is a lot of military technology that is also beneficial to the state and the nation,” said the Chancellor of the Defense University.
BRIN chief Laksana Tri Handoko said Amarulla would be assisted in leading BRIN on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, Defense University lecturer Hasto Kristiyanto said the government is currently pushing downstream, so it requires a lot of quality human resources as well as research and innovation achievements.
He looked at the role BRIN very important to achieve the goals to be achieved by the government. “Downstreaming is not enough just to be understood, it has to be accomplished through HR and research preparation. Hence, education and research that produce innovation need to be improved,” Hasto said.
