“It is suspected that the death occurred while in the water,” said Carmen Leizagoyen of Uruguay’s environment ministry.
“Up to 90 percent of young penguins who die have no fat reserves and empty stomachs,” he added.

Science Alert said the mass deaths of the Magellanic penguin didn’t always happen for the same reason. Most died due to rapid climate change.
For example, in 2019, 354 penguins died in Argentina at their nesting sites due to an extreme heat wave, but there were also cases of hypothermia, storms or starvation.
“It all depends on where these penguins are in their migration. It is not uncommon for many young people to die during these journeys. But the number of recent deaths is out of control,” Science Alert wrote.
